Product Overview

Olivem® 1000 is a premium, olive-derived emulsifier used to create smooth oil-in-water (O/W) creams and lotions.

Put simply, an emulsifier allows the oil and water parts of a formulation to mix together and remain stable. This is what turns separate oils and water-based ingredients into products such as moisturising creams, facial lotions and body creams.

Olivem® 1000 is non-ionic, non-ethoxylated and PEG-free and is known for creating elegant emulsions with a pleasant skin feel.

INCI: Cetearyl Olivate (and) Sorbitan Olivate

Why Choose Olivem® 1000?

Olivem® 1000 does more than simply hold oil and water together.

Its olive-derived composition can form organised liquid-crystal structures within an emulsion. In simpler terms, these structures arrange themselves in layers that resemble aspects of the skin's natural lipid organisation. This is why Olivem® 1000 is often described as a biomimetic emulsifier.

For the formulator, this makes Olivem® 1000 particularly attractive when you want to create a cream or lotion that combines reliable emulsification with an elegant, moisturising skin feel.

Key benefits include:

  • Smooth, elegant skin feel
  • Moisturising properties
  • Excellent spreadability
  • No soapy effect
  • Olive-derived chemistry
  • PEG-free and non-ethoxylated
  • Can be used as the main emulsifier in suitable O/W formulations
  • Can also be used at lower levels as a co-emulsifier alongside another emulsifying system

Compared with a basic emulsifying wax, Olivem® 1000 is particularly interesting when the feel and performance of the finished product matter just as much as bringing the oil and water together.

What Can You Make With It?

Olivem® 1000 is suitable for a wide variety of cosmetic formulations, including:

  • Facial moisturisers
  • Face creams
  • Body creams and lotions
  • Hand creams
  • Lightweight lotions
  • Rich moisturising creams
  • Gel-creams
  • Eye-area formulations
  • Hair conditioners
  • Crème rinses
  • Leave-in conditioning products

Recommended Usage

As the main O/W emulsifier: 3–5%
As a co-emulsifier: 0.5–2%

For example, if you are making 100 g of product, a 3% usage level would mean using 3 g of Olivem® 1000.

The ideal amount will depend on the type of product you are making, the amount of oil in your formulation and the texture and thickness you want to achieve.

How to Use

Olivem® 1000 comes as waxy flakes and has a melting range of 65–75°C.

It is normally melted during the heating stage of making your cream or lotion. Once melted, the heated oil and water phases can be combined according to your chosen formulation method to create the emulsion.

As with all emulsifiers, your finished formulation should be tested for stability and compatibility, particularly when changing the oil level or introducing new ingredients.

Solubility & Formulation Behaviour

Olivem® 1000 is:

  • Dispersible in vegetable oils
  • Dispersible in mineral oils
  • Dispersible in warm water
  • Soluble in organic solvents

For everyday formulation purposes, the important point is that Olivem® 1000 is designed to become part of the emulsion itself. It isn't an ingredient that you simply stir into an already completed cream.

Storage

Store unopened in the original container at 5–35°C.

Shelf life: 5 years from the manufacturing date when stored under the recommended conditions.

Important Information

Olivem® 1000 is supplied as a cosmetic raw material for formulation use and is not a finished cosmetic product.

Recommended usage levels are provided as formulation guidance. Always carry out appropriate compatibility and stability testing when developing a finished formulation.

For external cosmetic formulation use only.
